Tsegaye Kebede wins men's London Marathon
The legendary days of great Ethiopian Marathon runners seems to be
revived all over again. In less than a month three Ethiopian athletes
have won three major Marathons, Tilahun Regassa Rotterdam his fellow
Ethiopian Getu Feleke was second for the second straight year, Lelisa
Desisa Boston and now Tsegaye Kebede London.
Tsegaye Kebede won the second men's London Marathon of his running career in the English capital this afternoon.
The Ethiopian, who won the event back in 2010, looked as though he had
left himself with too much ground to make up with five miles left to
run.
However, he was able to hit the front in the closing stages and
he eventually won through in two hours, six minutes and four seconds. As well as his victory three years ago, the 26-year-old finished third in 2012 and second in 2009.
Tsegeye Kebede's life story is the sort that Hollywood producers bin as
too far-fetched. The fifth of 13 children, he was brought up in poverty
in Gerar Ber, 40km north of Addis Ababa, collecting firewood and
herding livestock to earn about 20 pence a day. He ate one meal a day.
