Sebastopol Looking to Build City’s Biggest Cinema Complex - Addis Ababa
Sebastopol Entertainment Plc is to construct a two-tower, four-storey multiplex on a 948sqm plot it has leased, in Arada District, for seven million Birr. The largest cinema theatre that is expected to change the industry is to be built on the corner of Haileselassie Street and Adwa Street in Arada District on a 948sqm plot. With 10 cinemas in total, Sebastopol aims to change the way films are watched in Ethiopia.
Construction is expected to cost 50 million Br and will begin in June 2013. The first tower will have 10 cinema screens, five of which will seat 250 people, whilst the largest will accommodate 1,000 cinema goers. The four remaining screens will have seats for between 400 and 600 people. The second tower will mainly be used as an entertainment centre, with play areas for children, as well as a food court that will serve a variety of cuisines, according to Tewodros. “The building will also have a film studio that will be able to accommodate the following settings: court, hospital, police station and hotels, in addition to having the full equipment that film makers may require,” he said.
Tewodros came into the film business as writer, director and producer of Gilbit Alem, before establishing Sebastopol Entertainment Plc, in 2005, with a four million Birr capital. The company currently operates Sebastopol Cinema at the Addis Abeba Exhibition Centre, which has two theatres, named Kuara and Mekdela, in remembrance of King Tewodros I. So far, Tewodros has produced eight movies, including the best selling film Kezkaza Welafen.
