Israel’s Bold New Queen
The latest Miss Israel, Ethiopian-born Yityish Aynaw, says it’s about time a black woman wore the crown
By Daniel Estrin
For anyone familiar with the saccharine judges of America’s prime-time beauty pageants, it might be jarring to hear how the director of Israel’s national competition describes Yityish “Titi” Aynaw, the Ethiopian-born 21-year-old who was just crowned Miss Israel. “I think she was not the most beautiful, by classic beauty,” said director Iris Cohen, comparing her to the19 other finalists in this year’s competition. But she does give Aynaw this: “She stands on the stage and you cannot ignore her.”
The new Miss Israel is just as blunt. Sitting with her last week in the green room at the Tel Aviv offices of La’Ishamagazine—the Israeli equivalent of Vogue and sponsor of the annual pageant—I told her about the stereotypical American beauty queen who seeks to impress the judges with her earnest hopes for world peace. “To say a sentence like that, in my opinion, is to sound retarded,” Aynaw replied. Then she stopped and wondered out loud if she should have said that. She changed “retarded” to “stupid,” and barreled on. “Iran is trying to develop a nuclear weapon, China is trying to become a superpower,” she said. “To say that I want world peace, of course I want it. It’s a dream. But I don’t think it will happen now.”
Israelis are better known for their grit than their grace, but Aynaw’s got both. Almost 30 years since the first clandestine Israeli airlift of Ethiopian Jews—the fabled descendants of the lost biblical tribe of Dan—to the Promised Land, the Jewish state has finally anointed one of them Israel’s most beautiful woman. Asked by judges why she deserved the title, Aynaw said it was about time that a black woman wore the crown.
I met Miss Israel a day after one of her first solo photo shoots. Aynaw was wearing a blue sleeveless dress with silver studs lining the shoulders. She teetered a bit in gold-strapped heels, but confidently strutted down the hallways of the magazine offices, one slender leg cutting across the other like scissors. Measuring in at 5 foot 9, not including her bun, she towered over the rest of the magazine’s editorial staffers, who congratulated her as she walked past their offices. She attributes her beauty to her Ethiopian heritage. “We have these chiseled faces. Everything is in the right place,” she said. “I never saw an Ethiopian who was stuck with some big nose.” She looks like a fiercer version of Tyra Banks, one of two role models she named in the competition. The other one was Martin Luther King.
***
The Miss Israel pageant has been held uninterrupted for the last 63 years. That’s a startling feat in a country only 65 years old, in a culture that typically rejects pomp and circumstance, and where most long-standing annual events commemorate tragedy and war. The late Hemda Nofech-Mozes, who married into the country’s most powerful media family, foundedLa’Isha magazine a year before Israel’s war of independence in 1948 and instituted the competition two years later. “Everyone was talking about war, everyone was talking about settlement. She said, wait a minute, there is a nation here … there are beautiful women,” said Cohen, the current pageant director.
You can learn a lot about the face Israeli society has tried to put forward by the faces its judges choose each year. In 1952, at the height of tensions between Israel’s European veterans and Middle-Eastern Jewish newcomers, Yemen-born Ora Vered became the first Miss Israel of Middle-Eastern Jewish descent. In 1993, in the midst of Israel’s tidal wave of Soviet immigration, Kiev-born Jana Khodriker won, and in 1999, the peak of Israel’s optimism that Arab-Israeli peace was imminent, judges crowned Rana Raslan the first Arab Miss Israel.
In the early days of the competition, each Miss Israel cast away her ethnic name for pure Hebrew ones; Israel’s first beauty queen, Miriam Yaron, was born in Germany as Giselle Freilich, while Ora Vered’s original last name was the Yemeni name Jamili. Similarly, in the last 30 years, many Ethiopian newcomers have adopted Hebrew names.
Not Aynaw, whose given name is connected to the circumstances of her birth. “I was born sick, but my mom believed I had a future,” she told me. Yitayish is Amharic for “look,” or as Aynaw explains it, “looking toward the future.”
“I’d never change my name,” said Aynaw. “Ever.”
Aynaw’s biography is, as she calls it, a Cinderella story. Born in a small township near Gondar in northwest Ethiopia, she was orphaned by age 10. Her father died a year after she was born—she never found out how—and a decade later her mother died of a sudden illness. Her mother’s parents, who had already uprooted to Israel in 2000, arranged for her and her brother to move, too.
Aynaw grew up like many Ethiopian Jews, dreaming of going to Israel. “I was told this was the land of milk and honey,” she said, laughing. “That I’d go on the street, bend down, and pick up golden coins. I’d open the faucet and milk would pour out.”

Iowa Boy from Ethiopia won't let amputation slow him down
By EMILY CHRISTENSEN , emily.christensen@wcfcourier.com
Third in a series of stories included in the latest edition of Inclusion magazine, a Courier publication devoted to the diversity of our community.
WATERLOO, Iowa --- At just 13 years of age Temesgen Larson has overcome more than any child ever should.
The boy, born in Ethiopia, struggled daily for survival. When his mother fell ill, the child --- then only 5 or 6 --- took to begging on the streets of his city to gather enough food and money to support his family. Two years ago Teme, as he's now known, was rescued by Diane and Scott Larson, a Waterloo couple with two biological children and a previously adopted Ethiopian daughter, Sabrina.
The Larsons knew their journey would not be easy. Sabrina came to them as a toddler with little in the way of verbal skills. She learned English without a problem.
Teme knew no English. And physically he had challenges that many had warned would be very difficult to overcome. His left leg, which was severely burned in a fire, likely would need to be amputated. The wounds never healed properly, which made it impossible for Teme to walk on both legs. Instead, he moved through life on his hands and knees.
Since 2008, the family and a small group of supporters have fought the necessary battles and come out on the other side. There have been moments of hardship and moments of great joy. The things that they thought would be the most difficult, like the amputation, proved to be an easier transition than they expected. Teme had the surgery to remove his leg shortly after arriving in the U.S. and is now adept at maneuvering on his silver and bright green prosthetic limb.
However, Teme said learning to speak and read was much harder than he, or his parents, had ever imagined. The Hoover Middle School sixth-grader still spends several hours a day in an English-language learner program, but his vocabulary is sound enough to earn him a spot on the school's honor roll. Athletically he is excelling at football, basketball and wrestling --- some using his prosthetic limb and others going without.
"In general people have been really supportive," Diane Larson said.
Though the family's experience in the Cedar Valley has been mostly positive, Diane said there have been low points along the path. At one point, shortly after the family adopted Sabrina, Diane was at Barnes and Noble with Sabrina and her biological daughter, Noelle, when someone in passing made a comment that included "the N-word."
"We were passing each other. I was going in, and he was leaving. I looked at Noelle like 'did he really just say that?'" Diane said. "I couldn't decide if I should approach him, but then I decided that anybody who would say that, it wouldn't matter what I said. She was just so little, and so beautiful. I couldn't figure out how anyone could say that."
Diane said the racial diversity of Waterloo has gone a long way toward making her family seem less odd, though she said she still gets some sideways glances when she is out-and-about alone with her two adopted children. Those glances are usually less common when the entire family is together.
Teme said he has had no trouble making friends, though some are curious about his history. And he is happy to share.
"They ask about leg, and where I've been before," he said.
"Not about your parents being white?" Diane asked, laughing.
Teme's involvement in multiple sports has also helped him acclimate himself to the American culture. He plays football and wrestles, without his prosthetic, and plays basketball with the prosthetic.
"At games and tournaments we've had a lot of people come up and say that Teme has been their inspiration," Scott said.
Diane said she often hears other spectators commenting on Teme during games and meets. She listens quietly as they marvel at how Teme is able to engage without his left leg. Their comments are rarely negative.
"I just want to say 'Yeah, that's my boy,'" she said.
Jesse Knight is a parent coach with the Waterloo West High Junior Wahawk Club, where Teme has wrestled since the 2011-2012 season. He said the kids have all been very accepting of Teme, who has proved his dominance on the mat.
"He's taught the kids that they can do anything and not to be discouraged when things get tough," Knight said.
Knight said one of his most memorable experiences with Teme came at a meet at Don Bosco school in 2011. Teme was in the last match of the day, and all the kids had gathered around the mat to cheer him on.
"It was probably 50 or 60 kids matside watching him there," he said. "That was one of the first times he finished in first place."
Outside of athletics, Scott said the family has met several Ethiopian families who have served as a network of support for their family. He said not all adoptive families have had such great luck. Scott's sister who lives in Colorado adopted a child from China.
"In general, my sister has not found any positive response. But, people from Ethiopia, it's almost a relief, but it is a different country. It's a third -world country with not as many opportunities," Scott said.
The family is doing their part through relationships with Ethiopian families in the Cedar Valley and trips to the kids' native country. They want to make sure their children understand where they came from and to know that families gave them up so they could have a better life in Iowa. Diane said she takes great pride in hearing her children talk about their other family and their home country.
"Sabrina came up to me one day and said 'Mom, my country is better than your country because it's warm there and we can walk around barefoot all the time.' Then she stopped and said 'I'm from Africa, right?'" Diane said. "I think it is so great that they know they had another home before this was their home."

THE NATURAL THERAPY FOR HEADACHE
Natural Therapy For Headaches!
In about 5 mins, your headache will go.......
The nose has a left and a right airway side.
We use both to inhale and exhale.
Actually they are different.
You'll be able to feel the difference.
During a headache, try to close your right airway in the nose and use your left airway in the nose to breathe.
In about 5 mins, your headache will go.
If you feel tired, just reverse, close your left airway in the nose and breathe through your right airway in the nose.
After a while, you will feel your mind is refreshed.
Right side belongs to 'hot', so it gets heated up easily.
Left side belongs to 'cold'.
Most females breathe with their left airways in the noses, so they get "cooled off" faster.
Most of the guys breathe with their right airways in the noses, they get worked up.
Do you notice, the moment you awake, which side breathes better?
Left or right ?
If left is better, you will feel tired.
So, close your left airway in the nose and use your right airway in the nose for breathing..
You will feel refreshed quickly.
Do you suffer from continual headaches?
Try out this breathing therapy.
Close your right airway in the nose and breathe through your left side of nose.
Your headaches will be gone.
Continue the exercise for one month.
Why not give it a try.....a natural therapy without medication.

Ashenafi Kebede
June 8th, 2009 § 1
Dr. Ashenafi Kebede, one of Ethiopia’s greatest cultural treasures–composer, conductor, ethnomusicologist, historical musicologist, music educator, novelest, and poet. Dr. Kebede received degrees from the University of Rochester (B.A. from Eastman School of Music in 1962) and Wesleyan University (M.A. in 1969 and Ph.D. in 1971, both degrees in ethnomusicology).
He founded the National Saint Yared School of Music in Ethiopia, served as its first director from 1963 to 1968. In 1967 he was designated as a “National Composer” by Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I, and was awarded the Haile Selassie I Foundation Grant for Outstanding Achievement in Cultural Affairs, the youngest artist to ever receive that award. Shortly thereafter he began his graduate study in the United States, and became a doctoral student of David McAllester at Wesleyan.

There he received the distinction of being the first Ph.D. in ethnomusicology to graduate in that program. Ashenafi had always held Dr. McAllester in his highest regard, and was proud to be counted among a handful of scholars who were part of that important school for the history of ethnomusicology. Included as his colleagues in those formative years for the discipline were Genchi Tsuge (Japan), Jon Higgins (Canada), Héctor Vega (Puerto Rico), and Vishwanathan (India). It was truly a multicultural mix of international scholars.
After several years teaching at Queens College and Graduate School of The City University of New York and Brandeis University, Ashenafi Kebede joined The Florida State University as Director of the Center for Black Culture (later to become the Center for African American Culture). He also became a tenured professor in the School of Music. His accomplishments as Director of the CBC and CAAC were many, ranging from achievements in academia to music and art. He developed the Communiversity which brought university-level coursework to Tallahassee residents. He sponsored a multitude of dramatic presentations, concerts, and art exhibits, all receiving excellent reviews and often characterized by standing-room only attendance.
Some of the most memorable musical events were concerts by Sarah Vaughan, Paul Berliner and Ephat Mujuru (music from Zimbabwe), Djimo Kouyate (music from Senegal), Africa Oyé, From The Blues To Broadway, Saturday Night/Sunday Morning, and many others. Ashenafi was a prolific writer, and his works include a novel (Confession, published in 1964), articles in ethnomusicology journals, a book entitled Roots of Black Music, and numerous articles in The Chronicler (the magazine of the Center for African American Culture, which he edited). He was also awarded numerous grants which enabled the Center to sponsor many events, including the highly successful 1993 Ethiopian Research Council Convention.
As a composer, Ashenafi Kebede has received high esteem in international circles. Hailed as “The Black Kodaly” in Hungary, after conducting his orchestral piece entitled “The Shepherd Flutist” [click here to download the music] in 1967, he has also written numerous chamber works that have an international flavor. One of his favorite techniques was to join Ethiopian and Japanese musical ideas–Koturasia is one of those masterpieces, written for flute, clarinet, violin, and Japanese koto. Born in 1938 in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia, Ashenafi learned about life and its creative potential from his mother, a very compassionate and artistic person. As he explained to his colleague, Dr. Fikre Tolossa, in the early 1990s (Ethiopian Review), “[My mother] wrote beautiful semi-sacred verse and poetry, and recited from memory several of Saint Yared’s melodies. She chanted Praises to [the] Virgin Mary every day, and sang for [me] the Psalms of David playing Begena [a stringed instrument] every night.
She had a great influence upon [my] soul.” His mother died when Ashenafi was nine years old, creating in him a great sadness, as he explained: “I am now over fifty and I have not yet overcome my sadness from her death. I am still heart-broken. That is undoubtedly why everything that I compose is melancholic.” Those of us who knew and worked closely with Ashenafi Kebede are saddened over his untimely and early death. He was a kind, considerate, and loving person who always had a smile for his friends. He gave much and had much to offer. Dr. Ashenafi passed away on Friday, May 8, 1998 at the age sixty.
